About the Position of Planning Commissioner

The position of Planning Commissioner is one of the most important volunteer positions in the City. Planning Commissioners set the future course for City development and review and approve the site plans of all commercial and industrial development in the City. An example is the new Ebels General Store due to open in February 2021.

Upon appointment as a Planning Commissioner, you will be provided the Planning Commissioners Handbook prepared by the Michigan Municipal League to help guide you in the position.

As a Planning Commissioner there are several expectations:

• Attend Meetings-1 per month plus specials- about 14 per year.
• Knowledge of Planning Commission By Laws.

• Zoning - Understanding of various Districts and areas of need to update.

• Public Education - Communicating with citizens about the need for comprehensive Planning for the future of the City.
• Conflicts of Interest - Being open, honest and transparent if you see any potential conflicts per the Code of Ethics of Reed City.
